Ohio Valley Chapter, CPSP
October 26 & 27,  2001
AmeriSuites, Indianapolis Airport

Present: Diplomates Bogia, Myers, Uy, Whalen, Donatelli, Ballinger.

Friday, October 26, 10:00 a.m.

Began with discussion of next meeting.  Decided to meet Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, after the Virginia Beach national meeting.  We should be able to begin about 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, and finish by noon on Sunday.

Also discussed continuing on-line meetings.  Ben has decided to subscribe to a chat room service which should be more dependable than the free ones have been.  Cost will be negligible.

Ben reported on a conversation with Raymond Lawrence about some Council decisions:

We decided to follow our usual practice of allowing time for each of our members to update the Chapter on his/her personal and professional lives.

Gino Donatelli

Gino shared some of the details of his move from Lexington to Chicago, and his process of moving into his new position at Loyola.  He is not yet sure whether or not he will be conducting a CPE program, but, in any event, it will not be until next year.

He will be going on a Caribbean cruise in December, a farewell gift from his Lexington parish.

He also brought copies of chapters 1 - 4 of his doctoral dissertation, and would appreciate any feedback anyone wants to give him.  (Malcolm returned his copy on Saturday morning, having read it and commented!)

Kay Myers

Kay received helpful feedback on an issue about the possibility of having no CPE students for coverage in her hospital.  She presented a mix of her own personal issues and institutional expectations of her department.

Malcolm Ballinger

Malcolm had prepared a three-page account of his involvement in CPE, detailing some of his work with Carroll Wise, Rollin Fairbanks, Richard Cabot, and Russell Dicks.  He also showed us a letter to him from Anton Boisen concerning Malcolm's dissertation topic.

The Chapter also had a chance to hear from Malcolm his process in the six months since Marjorie's death.  He has moved into a retirement facility, and has made many adjustments in his life and life style.

Saturday, October 27, 9:00 a.m.

Ben Bogia

Ben enumerated his many interests and tasks since retiring, and claims that life has never been better.  His CPE program for the Fall semester was terminated when two of his three students dropped out, but he has plans for a Spring program.

Henry Uy

Aside from his envy of Ben's retired state, Henry is doing what he likes to do.  He shared a process in which he is engaged with a particular student, and received feedback from the Chapter about supervisory strategies.

He says that he is near enough to retirement that he is looking ahead for possibilities, but is making no definite plans yet.

Joe Whalen

Joe's work continues much as it has been, and he is happy with it for the most part.  He discussed a sense of injustice in having to be on-call 24/7 because of his function as a priest when no other chaplains have that responsibility.  He received support for his position, and several suggestions (not all of which are feasible!)

Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at noon.  Next meeting will be at Virginia Beach in March, and we will attempt to meet on-line once or twice before then.
